THE LATE DR. ARNOLD RUGE. The funeral took place at Brighton of Dr. Arnold Ruge, who came to England many years ago as a political refugee, and who was one of those men who may rightly be said to have lived in advance of the age in which they moved. Born in 1803, Ruge became a student at Jena, and joined eagerly in those movements which sought to free Germany from those impediments which stood in the way of its becoming one of the Great Powers of Europe. This energy led to his being imprisoned as a political offender; but he turned his enforced retirement to good account by devoting himself to the classics, whence Sprung avein of metaphysical thought which deeply tinged the current of his after writings. When liberated Ruge started critical review, in which was reflected the vigorous and progressive ideas that had previously got him into trouble with the authorities, and this led to Ruge shifting from Halle to the Saxon capital and the ne to Paris. At length, however, the break-up of the European settlement brought him back to his native country as deputy for Breslau in the Frankfort Parliament, “ where he became the acknowledged leader of the Extreme Left, whose programme was the unity of Germany under one Sovereign Parliament.” His opinions were in advance of the time, and eventually, after the organ in which his literary and political views found expression had been suppressed, he came to England, and since 1850 he had lived in Brighton. He, however, lived long enough to see his desires for the unification of Germany carried out, and to receive from the German Government, through Prince Bismarck’s recognition, an annuity from the national Treasury as an acknowledgment of his general ability as a literary man and as a politician, though this recognition did not come until a few years since, towards the closing stages of a life animated in every way by the intensest feelings of Liberalism and patriotism. |

RUGE, Arnold, * 13. Sept. -
